1. Sign up for a ServSafe Certified course

The first step to becoming a licensed Food Manager is to take a ServSafe approved training course. These courses will teach you critical food handling and preparation safety and will also give you insights about the exam so that you can pass it with ease. Safe Eaten provides ServSafe certified training courses for individuals in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and Maryland who are just getting started in the food industry, or for seasoned professionals.

2. Take the ServSafe Certification Exam

You can take the ServSafe Certification exam once you have completed your training course. Safe Eaten provides proctoring as a part of your course schedule and costs, so there’s no additional fees to take the exam. If you are already working in the food industry and need to update your certification and license, we provide streamlined one-day courses with exams included.

3. Apply for your Food Manager License

Once you have passed the ServSafe exam, you will receive your Food Manager certification. This certification can then be taken to your state’s Department of Health. Just passing the exam does not make you a licensed Food Manager! You must complete your state’s application for a Food Manager license to meet this requirement.

See below for additional info on where to apply.

4. Re-test and re-apply every 3 years

Individuals who work in the food industry must recertify and reapply for their Food Management License every three years in order to stay up to date on safety and health regulations. We provide streamlined, one-day refresher courses and exams for those already working in the field.
